June 2024 Monthly – Event

We had 14 wizards join us for the June monthly at the Royal Oak on Kent Street.

Seven players were returning from the TUNDRA WOLVES CHALLENGE VII in Montreal, a week earlier. They were still hungry for more Magic.

This month, we tried the X-point Old School format. By assigning points to certain (powerful) cards, it creates a different meta for the format.  Everyone liked it, but agreed that next time, we should allow 4 Strip Mine, costing 1 point each.

PS: A huge thank you to Jason for hosting the June monthly, collecting deck pics, and writing the report.

8 players were on mono-colored deck, and the meta was really fast. 3 players opted for a more control-oriented deck, two of which were unpowered and ended up in the top 4.

Francois is in control behind his Moat against Kostas white weenie. But the 3 Black Vise force Francois to stay under 4 cards.

Using the Mind Bomb, Jason threw a Deep Spawn in the graveyard first turn. Then his Will-O-Wisp and 1/3 Brass Man kept aggro creatures in check, while he waited to draw his Soul Exchange, which stirred the 6/6 trample/shroud lobster out of its muck, right into the battlefield, toward victory against Jimmy, who had no answer for graveyard deck.

The Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow; straight out of The Wizard of Oz.

All evening, Francois had success with Ivory tower, an underplayed card in our group. Dylan had a dozen land destruction spells, supporting Underworld Dreams / Howling Mine / Black Vise punishing synergy.

One of the Arabian Nights tale concerns an evil blacksmith who repented his ways and, as a result, found that he could handle fire and forge metal with his bare hands — thus, a 1/2 creature with protection from Red. With 4 of these, Chelsea was able to easily handle Fred Atogs.

Jason have to do complex math during his Upkeep; he need to mill two cards for the Deep Spawn, feed diner to the Lord of the Pit, chose which land and creature to untap under Brian Winter Orb/Smoke lock, keep the Will-O-Wisp available to block the Gauntlet of Might-powered-Shivan Dragon and try to dodge the two Icy Manipulators.

After 3 rounds, two 3-0s remained; Joe’s Mono Green Horde versus Chelsea White Weenie.  This is the final match between Chelsea and Joe.

Congrats Chelsea!

Between game, some played Unlimited 40. Each of those Plague Rats are 6/6.

Five of us stayed at the Royal Oak after the tournament, to do a free-for-all multiplayer match.  Fred tough he outsmarted us with his first turn Ankh of Mishra, but Dilan won with a double Underworld Dreams/Wheel of Fortune, dealing 14 to everyone.
